MANIFESTA 16 RUHR 2026 – ART, CULTURE & URBAN TRANSFORMATION

  • What exactly is Manifesta? The European Nomadic Biennale takes place every two years at different locations across Europe. At the invitation of the respective hosts, it brings artistic projects, urban and architectural interventions, and a diverse programme of educational activities to regional and international audiences.

The focus is on engaging with current social, political and cultural issues in Europe – underpinned by collaboration between local communities and international stakeholders. In this way, Manifesta sees itself as a catalyst for sustainable social change.

  • What is Manifesta 16 Ruhr? Manifesta 16 Ruhr 2026 is one of Europe’s most significant biennials for contemporary art. From 21 June to 4 October 2026, Manifesta will take place in the Ruhr region, bringing international artists to Essen, Bochum, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen. Manifesta is conceived as a ‘nomadic biennial’ and changes its venue every two years. In 2026, the focus will be on the Ruhr metropolitan region – with exhibitions, installations and cultural projects in extraordinary urban spaces.

Where will Manifesta 2026 take place? The venues for Manifesta Ruhr 2026 are spread across several cities in the Ruhr region. Particular focus will be placed on:

  • Essen – In Essen, St Gertrud Church and Markuskirche, amongst others, are used as venues for artistic programmes.
  • Bochum –  In Bochum, churches such as St Ludgerus, St Anna, the Christ-König Art Church and the Gethsemane Church are providing unique venues which, through their architecture and historical significance, are opening up new perspectives for the Biennale.
  • Duisburg – One of Duisburg’s most distinctive cultural venues is the Liebfrauen Church
  • Gelsenkirchen – Other venues for the Biennale in Gelsenkirchen are: Thomaskirche, St Bonifatius, St Anna and St Josef.

The exhibitions are taking place in twelve vacant post-war churches as well as distinctive industrial and urban spaces – typical of the Ruhr cultural region.

  • Are the Manifesta cities well connected? Yes. Essen, Bochum, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen are excellently connected by public transport, meaning that several Manifesta venues can be visited in a single day. The easiest route is probably via the regional train or S-Bahn from Essen Central Station to Bochum Central Station. The journey takes around 10 minutes and several trains run daily between the two cities, making this option both quick and affordable.

  • Why is it worth staying for several days during Manifesta? As the exhibitions are spread across several cities, it’s well worth staying for a few days. Thanks to the short distances between the cities, you can visit several venues in a single day. A stay of several days is particularly worthwhile if you want to experience the diversity of Manifesta 16 Ruhr 2026 in the Ruhr region at a leisurely pace.

Those staying longer can easily combine their visit to Manifesta with other cultural highlights – such as museum visits, industrial heritage, trendy neighbourhoods or culinary discoveries in Essen and Bochum.
